Port Adriano yacht charter

A yacht charter from Port Adriano begins at the superyacht marina designed by Philippe Starck at El Toro, on Mallorca's south-west coast. It puts you close to the clear water around the El Toro and Malgrats islets, the pine-fringed coves of Portals Vells and the wide bay of Santa Ponsa, with your own captain choosing the calmest anchorage of the day.

Port Adriano
Overview

Port Adriano sits at El Toro, in the municipality of Calvià, just west of the Bay of Palma and about 20 kilometres from the city by the marina's own figure. The original harbour was extended into the marina that Starck designed, and the design runs to the details, with timber that recalls a yacht's deck and bollards and harbour lights made for the marina. Berths take yachts up to 80 metres, with a dedicated section for larger yachts, a 10,000 square metre shipyard and a seasonal dry dock service, while boutiques and restaurants line the quay above the water.

For a luxury yacht charter, Port Adriano is the natural base for the south-west coast. Close to the harbour, the islet of El Toro and the two Malgrats islets lie within the Illes del Ponent marine reserve, where Posidonia meadows and recovering grouper populations make for exceptional snorkelling. Round the headland, the narrow inlets of Portals Vells open onto the Bay of Palma, while Santa Ponsa, where King James I landed in September 1229, lies just up the coast. Port d'Andratx is roughly seven nautical miles away by sea, so a day that begins here spends more time at anchor and less in transit, with Sa Dragonera within reach on a settled day.

The rules here are part of the appeal. Anchoring on Posidonia seagrass is prohibited throughout the Balearics, and the reserve tightly restricts fishing in its high-protection zones and requires a permit for scuba diving, which is limited to designated dive points. Your captain anchors on sand or at an authorised buoy and arranges any dive through a licensed centre. Because the headland has water on both sides, there is often a calmer side when the wind gets up. June and September usually pair warm water with quieter anchorages, while July and August bring the liveliest marina. Every charter, from a sailing catamaran to a superyacht, runs with a professional captain.

Highlights
  • / 01

    Designed to the last detail

Starck's design runs from deck-like timber to the marina's own bollards and harbour lights, with berths for yachts up to 80 metres and a 10,000 square metre shipyard on site.

  • / 02

    Protected waters next door

The Malgrats islets and El Toro lie within the Illes del Ponent reserve, where grouper and sea bass have returned and Balearic and Cory's shearwaters breed on the Malgrats.

  • / 03

A head start on the west

Starting here rather than in Palma puts Portals Vells, Santa Ponsa and Port d'Andratx close at hand, and Sa Dragonera within reach on a full day.

Where to anchor and swim
  1. 01

    Portals Vells

Round the headland on the Bay of Palma side, three narrow inlets cut into the pine woods, with small beaches including the Platja del Mago. A short coastal path leads to the Cova de la Mare de Déu, an old marès sandstone quarry with a chapel carved into the rock, linked to a legend of Genoese sailors saved from a storm. It is popular in high summer, so captains often favour an early or late stop.

  2. 02

    Illa del Toro

The islet off the El Toro headland sits at the heart of the original reserve, created in 2004. Grouper and sea bass have recovered strongly since then, and tuna, barracuda and dentex are sometimes seen. Scuba diving needs a permit and is limited to designated dive points with a cap on divers per visit, so dives are booked through a licensed centre, while snorkelling is free throughout the reserve and stays simple from the yacht.

  3. 03

    Illes Malgrats

Two islets opposite Santa Ponsa, protected within the reserve and as a special protection area for birds in the Natura 2000 network. Cory's and Balearic shearwaters breed here and the endemic Lilford's wall lizard lives on the rocks. The islets are admired from the water: the yacht anchors on sand nearby where the rules allow, and fishing from the islets is banned.

  4. 04

    Santa Ponsa bay

A wide bay with a sandy beach, just up the coast from the marina. King James I of Aragon landed here in September 1229 to take Mallorca from Moorish rule, and a cross at the sea entrance to the Santa Ponsa marina marks the spot. Captains anchor on sand clear of the seagrass, and the bay can be a calmer choice on days with an easterly breeze.

Ashore

  • Walk the Port Adriano quay, where international fashion boutiques sit alongside restaurants ranging from Mediterranean cooking to haute cuisine, for a long lunch before or after the sea.
  • Arrange a dive in the El Toro reserve through a licensed diving centre, which the marina lists among its services, before or after a day on the water.
  • In Santa Ponsa, see the cross that marks King James I's landing or play a round on one of the golf courses near the bay. In September the town's fiesta stages a mock battle between Moors and Christians on the beach.
  • For days ashore, SERMAN RENT, our sister company in the SERMAN group, offers premium car rental, whether for Palma's old town or the villages of the Serra de Tramuntana.
FAQ

Questions Port Adriano

/ 01Why start a yacht charter at Port Adriano instead of Palma?

It saves time when the day is about the west. The marina sits beside protected islets offshore, with Portals Vells and Santa Ponsa close by and Port d'Andratx roughly seven nautical miles along the coast, so more of the day is spent at anchor. Palma remains the better start for the cathedral from the sea and the eastern side of the bay. The departure marina depends on where your yacht is based, and your quote confirms it.

/ 02Can we swim and snorkel in the El Toro and Malgrats marine reserve?

Yes. Swimming and snorkelling from the yacht are a highlight here, and fish life around both islets has recovered markedly since their reserves were created in 2004. Snorkelling is free throughout the reserve, fishing is banned or tightly limited in the high-protection zones, and scuba diving needs a permit and uses designated dive points, so your captain can arrange a dive with a licensed centre.

/ 03Is Port Adriano suitable for a superyacht charter?

Yes. The marina has a dedicated section for yachts from 20 to 80 metres and a shipyard on site. Depending on the yacht and the season, a crewed superyacht can begin a day charter or a week here, always with its full professional crew aboard. Prices are on request.
