Sa Dragonera yacht charter off Sant Elm

A yacht charter to Sa Dragonera takes you to the long, wild island off Sant Elm on Mallorca's south-west tip: a natural park where sheer cliffs, old lighthouses and the clear water of a marine reserve set the scene for a calm, unhurried day at sea.

Overview

Sa Dragonera lies off the south-west tip of Mallorca, across the Freu, the narrow channel that separates it from the village of Sant Elm. Steep, uninhabited and crowned by a high ridge, it looks from the water like a dragon asleep on the sea, and the deck of a yacht is the most comfortable place from which to take in the scale of its cliffs. In the 1970s a plan to build a resort here met strong local opposition and a long legal battle. The Consell de Mallorca bought the island in 1987, and in 1995 the Balearic government declared it a natural park, together with the islets of Es Pantaleu and Sa Mitjana.

Protection reaches well beyond the shoreline. The park and its surrounding marine area belong to the European Natura 2000 network, since 2016 the waters of the Freu have formed a regional marine reserve, and since 2020 the outer waters to the west have been a state marine reserve where anchoring is not permitted. For guests this means quiet, slow navigation through the channel, regulated buoys instead of anchors where they are in place, and swimming over Posidonia meadows, sandy patches and fallen rock. Groupers, scorpionfish, dentex and sea bream are among the species recorded in the reserve.

The appeal is in the contrast. On the north-western side, the cliffs drop straight into deep blue water and are home to a breeding population of Eleonora's falcons, which arrive in late spring. On the side facing Mallorca, Cala Lledó offers a small natural harbour, a visitor centre and signposted trails to the lighthouses and to Na Pòpia, the island's highest point. Every charter runs with a professional captain, who shapes the day around the wind: a slow cruise along the coast, a swim off Sant Elm, lunch aboard or ashore, and a return towards Port d'Andratx as the light turns gold.

Highlights
  • / 01

    Sa Dragonera, left untouched

A natural park since 1995, with no hotels, no shops and no permanent residents. Just walking trails, lighthouses, seabirds and the endemic Lilford's wall lizards that bask on every warm rock.

  • / 02

    Lighthouses and watchtowers

The Tramuntana and Llebeig lighthouses have guarded either end of the island since 1910, when they replaced the old lighthouse on Na Pòpia, set so high that mist often hid it. Old watchtowers, built against corsair raids, recall earlier centuries.

  • / 03

    Marine reserve water

Protected seagrass meadows, sand and fallen rock help keep the water around the island remarkably clear, which makes snorkelling a highlight wherever the reserve rules allow.

Where to anchor and swim
  1. 01

    Cala Lledó

The island's natural harbour and main landing point, with a jetty and the park's visitor centre, where all four signposted trails begin. Depending on the rules in force and the size of the yacht, guests are usually taken ashore by tender during visiting hours while the yacht waits offshore.

  2. 02

    Sant Elm and Es Pantaleu

The bay off Sant Elm, partly sheltered by the islet of Es Pantaleu, served as an anchorage long before tourism arrived. Sandy ground off the beach suits a swim stop in settled weather, though the bay is open to winds from the south-west round to the north-west. Landing on Es Pantaleu is prohibited, and where regulated buoys are in place they are used instead of an anchor.

  3. 03

    Cala en Basset

A small gravel cove a short way north-west of Sant Elm, below La Trapa and the old Cala en Basset watchtower, facing Sa Dragonera. It is difficult to reach on foot, which keeps it quiet, and Spain's official tourism guide lists it as an ideal spot for anchoring, with calm, crystal-clear water in settled weather.

  4. 04

    Cala es Conills

A small, more rugged pebble cove close to Sant Elm's main beach. When the bay is busy it makes a quieter swim stop, reached by tender from the yacht.

Ashore

  • Walk one of the four signposted routes from Cala Lledó: the Na Miranda viewpoint, the Tramuntana or Llebeig lighthouses, or the old lighthouse on Na Pòpia.
  • Visit the park's information centre at Cala Lledó, with an exhibition on the island's history and natural heritage.
  • Lunch in Sant Elm, a former fishing village with relaxed seafood restaurants by the water (many close in winter).
  • Hike from Sant Elm to the ruins of La Trapa, a monastery founded in 1810, for wide views over Sa Dragonera.
FAQ

Questions Sa Dragonera

/ 01Can we go ashore on Sa Dragonera from the yacht?

Yes, during the park's visiting hours. Guests are usually landed by tender at the Cala Lledó jetty, the main access point and the start of the island's signposted trails, while the yacht waits offshore. Landing from private boats is also permitted at Cala Cucó and Cala Llebeig, again without mooring, although guests landed there must stay on the cove rather than walk inland. There is no food or drink for sale on the island, so take water, a hat and good shoes.

/ 02Can a yacht anchor around Sa Dragonera?

Not freely. The outer waters are a marine reserve where anchoring is prohibited, Posidonia meadows are protected throughout the Balearics, and regulated buoys are used in parts of the Dragonera and Sant Elm area. Your captain knows where the yacht can stop for a swim within the rules.

/ 03Is Sa Dragonera a good day trip by yacht from Palma?

It is a classic full-day charter on the west coast, often combined with Port d'Andratx and Sant Elm. Joining the yacht closer to the island, at Port Adriano or Port d'Andratx, leaves more time at anchor, and we suggest the best base for your yacht and the forecast.
