Day or week yacht charter in Mallorca: how to choose

A day aboard fits around a stay on land, while a week makes the yacht your residence. How to choose the right format for your group, your route and your pace.

Choosing between a day or week yacht charter in Mallorca is less about time at sea than about the role the yacht plays in your holiday. For a day, the yacht is the highlight of a stay on land: you board in the morning, follow the coast and are back at your villa or hotel for dinner. For a week, the yacht becomes the place you stay, and the islands unfold one anchorage at a time. Both run with a professional captain and, depending on the yacht, a full crew. The right choice depends on your group, your route and the pace you enjoy.

A day on board: Mallorca's coast as part of your stay

Day itineraries often start from Palma, Puerto Portals or Port Adriano, depending on the yacht's base. Along the south-west coast, the route passes sheltered bays such as Portals Vells and the islets of El Toro and the Malgrats, which lie within the Illes del Ponent marine reserve. On a longer day it can continue to Sa Dragonera, a natural park off the western tip where boats keep more than 50 metres from the shore and land guests only at the authorised coves. In summer the sea breeze, the embat, usually builds a few hours after sunrise and peaks in the early to mid afternoon, so a good captain covers exposed stretches early and saves the calmest anchorage for lunch and a long swim.

A day suits guests new to yachts, families with younger children, celebrations and anyone who would rather sleep ashore, and asks little of the diary: one day, chosen when the forecast looks right.

A week on board: the yacht as your residence

A week charter usually means seven nights on board, traditionally Saturday to Saturday in the Mediterranean, although the yacht's calendar sets the start day. You unpack once. The crew looks after the yacht and the cabins, and on larger yachts a chef plans menus from a preference sheet you complete before arrival, covering allergies, favourite wines and meal times.

The real difference is reach. A week opens what a single day cannot comfortably include: a night on a buoy in Cabrera National Park, an evening in Port de Sóller's harbour, the cliffs of Formentor, or a crossing to Ibiza and Formentera timed for a settled day. In Cabrera, navigation and mooring need prior authorisation from the park, and in July and August a stay on the buoys is limited to two nights, so those plans are made early.

Day or week: how the two compare

  • Reach: a day covers one stretch of coast, usually the Bay of Palma and the south-west. A week can take in Cabrera, the north coast or the Pitiusas.
  • Pace: a day follows the hours you book. A week lets the captain wait for the right wind or linger in a quiet cove.
  • Nights: after a day you sleep ashore. On a week you sleep at anchor, on a buoy or in a marina, and swim before breakfast.
  • Service: a day runs with a captain and, on larger yachts, a crew. A week usually brings the full crew, often with a chef.
  • Weather: a day can move to a calmer date, while a week follows the forecast, favouring the sheltered south-east when the tramuntana, a north to north-westerly wind, sets in.
  • Planning: a day can often be arranged at shorter notice; summer weeks, Cabrera buoys and marina berths are best reserved early.

How the yacht shapes the choice

The yacht and the format go together. Sport yachts and fast motor yachts are at their best for a day, covering more coastline between swims, and on a calm day, with the park's navigation permit in place, a fast motor yacht can make Cabrera a realistic full day out. Motor yachts with cabins, such as the Sunseeker 76 or the long-range Sirena 58, suit a few nights aboard. Our two sailing catamarans run as day catamarans for groups of up to 45 and 65, with wide, stable decks for a celebration at sea. For superyachts, a week is the usual booking; shorter stays are occasional, typically when a gap opens in the calendar. On many yachts, more guests can join for a day than can sleep on board.

How the costs are structured

Prices are on request, but the structure is worth understanding. A day is quoted for the yacht and crew for the agreed hours, and what is included, such as fuel, catering or drinks, varies from yacht to yacht, so the quote should name each item. A week charter usually follows MYBA terms: the charter fee covers the yacht and her crew, and variable costs such as fuel, food, drinks and port fees are paid from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). The captain manages the APA, keeps receipts and shares the account, and any unspent balance is returned at the end. VAT is charged on the charter fee rather than on the APA, and a crew gratuity is customary at the end of a week, at your discretion.

The middle ground: a few nights on board

If a full week feels like too much and a single day too little, a short charter of two or three nights is possible on some yachts, most easily outside the peak weeks of July and August. It pairs well with a villa stay: a first evening at anchor off the south-west coast, a night in Cabrera or Port de Sóller, then a return to land with the rest of the holiday still ahead. The format suits a yacht made for it, such as the Sunseeker 76, at home on an overnight escape, or the Technema 85, a comfortable base for unhurried island hopping. It is also a gentle way to discover whether life on board suits your group before planning a full week. Ask early, because the yacht's calendar decides what is possible.

Questions to settle before you decide

  • Will everyone sleep on board, and does the yacht's cabin plan suit your group?
  • Is there a place you would travel for, such as Cabrera, Formentor or Formentera?
  • Does anyone feel uneasy at sea, or prefer to be ashore each evening?
  • Are you marking one occasion, or planning a holiday built around the sea?

Whatever you choose, every charter with Serman Yacht Charter runs with a professional captain, so nobody in your group needs a licence.
