When to charter a yacht in Mallorca: a season guide

Spring light, high-summer energy or the warm sea of September: how each season shapes a luxury crewed yacht charter in Mallorca, and how far ahead to plan.

Choosing the right month for a yacht charter in Mallorca shapes everything else: the warmth of the sea, the mood in the anchorages, the wind your captain plans around and how far ahead the right yacht needs to be reserved. The main charter season runs from spring into autumn, with May to September the most popular months, and each part of it has its own character. There is no single best month, only the one that suits your group, whether that means lively harbours and the longest evenings or quiet coves and a sea still warm from summer. This guide sets out what each season brings to a crewed luxury charter around the island, and how far ahead to book.

Spring: the season opens in Palma

Spring is when the Mediterranean yachting season traditionally begins, and Palma marks it with the Palma International Boat Show, held each spring in the city's harbour. The hillsides are green and the light is clear. The anchorages are at their quietest, so a spring charter suits guests who value privacy and a slower pace more than long swims. The sea is the one thing that lags behind: water temperature follows the air with a delay, so in April and May it is still fresh and swims tend to be short. A motor or sport yacht covers more coastline in a day, and a long lunch in Port d'Andratx or Port de Sóller is easier to arrange before the summer rush.

June: long days before the peak

June is a favourite with experienced charter guests. The days are the longest of the year, the weather is usually settled and the sea warms through the month, although it is still cooler than it will be in September. The embat, the sea breeze that fills the Bay of Palma on summer afternoons, becomes part of the daily rhythm: mornings are often calm for the open stretches, and the captain keeps a sheltered cove for lunch, while a sailing catamaran puts the breeze to good use. Coves that are crowded in August are noticeably quieter. The Superyacht Cup, which has brought large sailing yachts to the Bay of Palma since 1996, is usually held in June and is a fine sight from the water.

July and August: the height of summer

High summer is the most requested time of year. The sea reaches its warmest in August, averaging around 26 °C off Palma, sunshine peaks, rain is rare and the evenings stay light late: the season for long swims, dinners on deck and sunset cruises back towards the lights of Palma. Puerto Portals and the bay are at their liveliest, and late July and early August bring the Copa del Rey MAPFRE regatta, organised by the Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and first sailed in 1982.

The best-known calas are busiest from late morning, so a good captain starts early and knows the less obvious anchorages. Some places need planning well ahead. In Cabrera National Park, navigation needs a permit requested online in advance, overnight stays are only on reserved park buoys, and in July and August a stay on the buoys is limited to two nights. Around Formentor, private cars are restricted on the peninsula road during the day for much of the season, so arriving by yacht is the most relaxed way to reach the beach.

September and October: the connoisseur's months

Many seasoned charter guests choose September. Because the sea holds the summer's heat, the water is usually warmer in September than in June, while the crowds thin out and marina berths become easier to secure. The light softens, the evenings are still warm enough to stay on deck after dark, and the anchorages that were full in August are calm again.

October extends the season for those who know it. The sea is often still warm enough for a swim, the harbours keep a relaxed pace and the days are mild. Autumn is also the wetter part of the year, with October on average the wettest month in Palma, and the easterly llevant can bring longer spells of rain and leaves the east coast exposed, so plans stay flexible and the captain follows the forecast closely.

Winter: a quieter, more selective season

From November to March, Mallorca is calm and uncrowded, and the winter light over the Serra de Tramuntana has a beauty of its own. Yacht charter is more selective in these months. Days are shorter, the sea is at its coolest and the weather is more changeable, while the northerly tramuntana is most frequent in the colder half of the year. Palma is also a working superyacht port, with shipyards such as STP carrying out refit and repair work, so some yachts may spend part of the winter in the yard. On a calm, sunny day a coastal charter can often be arranged on request, depending on the yacht, with lunch on board in a sheltered bay, but winter suits a relaxed outing more than a swimming holiday.

Wind and weather, whatever the month

Mallorca's winds shape every charter, and a professional captain reads them daily. In summer the embat usually rises a few hours after sunrise, is strongest in the early to mid afternoon and fades around sunset, which is why the first swim of the day and the last one before sunset are often the calmest. When the tramuntana blows, the north and north-west coasts, around Port de Sóller and Cap de Formentor, are exposed, while the south-east, from Colònia de Sant Jordi to Cala d'Or and Portocolom, lies in the lee of the island and is often calm. That is the quiet advantage of an island: there is usually a sheltered coast somewhere. In every season, anchoring over Posidonia seagrass is prohibited in the Balearics, so your captain anchors on sand or uses an authorised buoy.

How far ahead to book your yacht charter

  • July and August: as early as possible, especially for a particular yacht, a full week or a night in Cabrera.
  • June and September: well ahead for weeks and larger yachts, with a little more flexibility for day charters.
  • Event weeks: the Palma International Boat Show in spring and the Copa del Rey MAPFRE in late July and early August fill the Bay of Palma, so plan those dates early.
  • Spring, late autumn and winter: shorter notice is often possible, subject to the yacht's calendar and the forecast.
